This live, synchronous course is the perfect companion to the self-paced Foundations of Solution-Focused Practices Online Intensive. Designed to enhance your learning through hands-on practice, this course spans five two-hour sessions, allowing participants to refine their solution-focused techniques under the mentorship of a master clinician.

Each session corresponds to two sections of the self-paced online course, ensuring a seamless integration of concepts and skills. Participants will engage in interactive activities, including case studies, role plays, and breakout discussions, all customized to align with the unique needs of their practice settings.

To maintain a highly interactive and personalized experience, the course is limited to 12 participants. This ensures meaningful discussions, direct guidance, and actionable feedback tailored to each participant’s goals.

For those unable to attend the live sessions, recorded sessions will be available at the conclusion of the course. The self-paced option includes required quizzes to meet continuing education requirements.

Upon completing the live or self-paced course, participants will earn 10 continuing education credits, furthering their professional growth and expertise in solution-focused practice.

The specific Learning Objectives of the course are as follows. After completing the course, you will be able to:

    Practice core solution-focused techniques, including goal-oriented questioning, scaling tools, and amplifying positive differences, during role-plays and case discussions.
  2. Apply Solution-Focused Techniques in Real-World Scenarios
    Integrate solution-focused methods into case studies, breakout activities, and structured role-playing exercises, emphasizing practical and adaptable applications.
  3. Foster Collaborative Engagement
    Use solution-focused language to build collaborative and hopeful conversations with individuals, families, and groups in diverse practice settings.
  4. Refine Advanced Questioning Strategies
    Develop and apply skills such as the best hope question, miracle question, goal negotiation, scaling questions, and techniques to co-create actionable client goals.
  5. Analyze and Apply Case-Based Solutions
    Evaluate and implement client-focused strategies using case studies to identify strengths, resources, and preferred futures, while incorporating solution-focused safety and assessment planning.
  6. Enhance Emotional Regulation Skills
    Apply solution-focused techniques, such as “amygdala whispering” and the yes-set, to support clients in navigating and balancing intense emotions effectively.
  7. Customize Interventions for Diverse Contexts
    Tailor solution-focused practices to meet the unique needs of varied client populations and settings, including trauma, substance use, families, children, and educational systems.
  8. Measure and Evaluate Client’s Progress
    Practice solution-focused tools, such as scaling questions and feedback, to measure client progress and distinguish between problem-focused and solution-focused assessment approaches.
  9. Strengthen Connections Through Mapping
    Demonstrate the use of VIP mapping to identify and enhance supportive, challenging, and spiritual relationships, fostering meaningful connections.
  10. Collaborate and Build Sustainability
    Apply solution-focused techniques in team consultations, community partnerships, and organizational contexts, promoting sustainable implementation of solution-focused practices.

Course Assessment

Participants will be assessed in the following manner:

  • Class Participation: Participants are invited to clarify things they do not understand, pose questions, offer ideas, and broaden perspectives. Participants are encouraged to participate in exercises and discussions.

Instructors and Authors

Anne Bodmer Lutz, B.S.N., M.D. is the Director of the Institute for Solution Focused Therapy. She was trained by the founders of Solution-Focused Brief therapy, Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer. She is a board-certified adult, child and adolescent psychiatrist, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester MA, and was a nurse before becoming a physician. Anne has a private practice in West Boylston Massachusetts where she integrates solution-focused practices in her treatment of children and families. She provides direct clinical supervision, teaching, and training to medical students and psychiatric residents, workshops for community-based treatment organizations, agency based training and coaching in Solution-Focused Therapy. She has worked for many years integrating solution-focused practices in community mental health, residential treatment and with adolescents and families coping with substance use and co-occurring disorders.

Anne is the author of Learning Solution-Focused Therapy: An Illustrated Guide (2014, American Psychiatric Press) which includes over 30 videos and many case examples focusing on “how to” implement this approach, along with numerous articles, and chapters in books. She received a Massachusetts Course of Distinction award in 2016 for the online and blended learning course entitled “Solution-Focused Fundamentals and Practice.”
